Schwinn Airdyne Reviewed

Schwinn introduced the Airdyne exercise bike in 1977 and the design has remained virtually unchanged since then. Why? When you get something right, you don’t change it! It’s durable, easy to use, and people love it.

Here’s what one user said:

“I only bought this product for one reason–I wore my first one out at the equivalent of 30,800 miles. It only took about 20 years.

It gives me the workout I want, hence I bought this second one. I hope they are still on the market when I wear this one out–I should be about 90 then.”

As you can see, the Schwinn Airdyne bike is an upright exercise bike, not a recumbent. The handles are linked to the pedals, so you can work out your upper and lower body simultaneously, something you can’t do with a recumbent. You can also work out just your lower body or just your upper body, mixing up your routine so you don’t get bored.

What are some of the other features of this bike?

  • Infinite resistance levels
  • Air resistance system
  • Chain drive system
  • 2 Workout Programs
  • Heart Rate Monitoring
  • LCD display provides time, distance, calories, calories per hour, RPM, workload, and heart rate

Resistance is provided by the Airdyne’s fan wheel. The faster you pedal, the more air resistance is created, making it harder to pedal. The fan wheel really moves the air, too, blowing a stream of air over you to help keep you cool while you work out.

One downside the fan wheel is noisy. It’s been reported as no noisier than a vacuum cleaner, but you can’t watch TV or listen to music while exercising, something you can do on some of the magnetic resistance exercise bikes.

The Schwinn Airdyne bicycle won’t dazzle you with its electronics. However, it does have a basic package that provides feedback on the more essential parameters, such as time, distance, and heart rate, and allows you to monitor your progress as you exercise.

At 96 pounds, with a steel frame, it is rock solid. Even the heaviest users find it stable, with no tendency to wobble when pedaling fast. That doesn’t mean that it’s hard to move around. It has small wheels located on either side of the fan wheel. Just lock the fan wheel in place, and move the bike wherever you want it.

The Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike has proven itself for over 30 years. It is sturdy, reliable, provides an excellent total body workout that is easy on your joints, and at a cost that is probably no more than a year’s gym membership. This user sums it up pretty well.

“This was money well spent! If you can afford only one piece of cardio equipment, this is the one.”
